The 1976 press release by NASA about the Face on Mars
Picture of a rock formation that looks like a face on Mars taken by NASA's Viking 1 Orbiter in 1976.
Shadows make this rock formation look like a face - shadows form the eyes, nose, and mouth. The rock formation / face is about 1.5 kilometers across. The face on Mars was formed by the natural geological processes on the planet Mars.
Highest-Resolution view of the Face on Mars. The picture covers an area about 3.6 kilometers on a side.

A comparison between the size of the planet Mars and the size of the Earth. The Earth was photographed by the Galileo orbiter and Mars was photographed by the Mars Global Surveyor.
Pictures of the planet Mars by NASA's Hubble Space Telescope. Mars takes 24 hours and 39 minutes to rotate once on its axis. These photographs were taken at intervals of 6 hours and cover nearly 100% of the surface of Mars. Why is Mars red?

The first picture shows early spring in the Northern hemisphere on Mars - the polar ice caps are nearly as large as it gets. The second picture shows mid-spring in the northern hemisphere on Mars. A large part of the ice cap has sublimated. The third picture show early summer. The ring of dark sand dunes that surrounds the north pole of Mars is now clearly visible.

An image of the temperature at 2 AM at night on Mars. These temperatures were measured by the Thermal Emission Spectrometer on the Mars Global Surveyor spacecraft.
The coldest temperatures are -120C - these areas are shown in purple. The warmest temperatures are -65C and is shown in white.
The coldest areas contain very fine dust particles. The warmest areas have larger pieces of sand, gravel, and rocks.
