Picture of the East Candor, one of the connected valleys of Valles Marineris by the Viking 1 orbiter spacecraft.
This part of the East Candor Chasma ( map of Mars ) is 150 kilometers wide. It has steep, walled cliffs.

Picture of Valles Marineris region. ( Map of Valles Marineris ). This canyon is over 3,000 kilometers long and about 8 kilometers deep.

This large valley / chasma might have formed when this whole area collapsed over time 8 kilometers into the surface of Mars.

Picture of the Hellas Planitia region ( map of Mars ) on Mars. (Planitia means a lowlying plain or large, relatively featureless lowlands).

The Hellas basin is 1 800 kilometers in diameter - the largest basin on the planet Mars. Impact basins are formed when a large asteroid, comet or meteor hits the surface of Mars.
